The Future Seeds genebank in Colombia holds the world’s largest collections of beans, cassava and tropical forages, with over 67,000 distinct samples. It is one of the most advanced genebanks in the world and is developing a ‘knowledge bank’ enabling data-driven deployment of crop diversity. The iconic building is LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified and features an external ‘skin’ canopy to expel radiation, thermal control, natural radiation and rainwater harvesting.

What is a Genebank?
A success story in global cooperation, CGIAR’s network of genebanks is helping scientists climate-proof food systems and address some of humanity’s most pressing challenges.
Have you ever wondered what a genebank does? The short answer is that genebanks store genes. Not literally, although there are some specialized genebanks that do manage genes – the actual bits of DNA that give living things their distinct characteristics.
